I can be whatever, there is no predefined FQDN for POP or SMTP.
If you want it to be that, put those records in DNS as a Host A Record that
resolves to the IP address of your Exchange server.

ok I did a dns alias for mail.abc.com. If my AD domain name is abc.local and
my public name is abc.com do I need to do anything special other then the
alias in the abc.com zone? Also I have to authenicate outbound correct? on
the smtp protocol it has the check box to allow relay for authenicated users.

The default settings on the SMTP VS should work. You now should be able to
Telenet into the POP and SMTP using the DNS FQDN you set.
