Migrate 5.5 to 2003 |
|
|
Hi!
I would like to hear if you guys in here have any thoughts about what I'm
about to do and what problems I will get.
Scenario:
I have an Exchange organization with 2500 mailboxes. These boxes are spread
on 7 exchange 5.5 servers. The 7 servers are also in different domains. Some
AD, some NT4 and some mixed!
Task:
Upgrade one of the 5.5 servers to 2003.
The domain this 5.5 is in is migrated by 90% to AD.
My idea:
Install a new Exchange 2003 Server
Move the mailboxes from the old 5.5 to the new 2003
Move system folders
Decomission 5.5
Good or bad ?
What will happen to the users not yet in AD ?
Thanx in advance.
regards,
Richard

Not sure what you mean "move system folders." How can you have users
in the domain that are not in the Active Directory, just curious. |

You need to look into ADC, if you haven't already.

Do you have Public Folders too, you can use PFMIGRATE for this? Also you
will need to migrate any System Objects (DLs, Contacts ect that is homed to
that server). Are you going to install the 2003 Server in the same 5.5 Site?
There are ramifications if you do a cross-site / Administrative Group moves.

Thats pretty much the high level. The Deployment tools are helpful with |
ensuring the Mailbox cleanup has been done (i.e Resource Mailboxes). You may
consider putting in a temporary ADC server. Also I would gain a good
understanding of ADC before you implement it.
Yes there are such things as "system folders".

At the moment there isnt any public folders.
Yes the 2003 will be in the same site.

My main concern is if all users have to be migrated from the old NT4 domain
to AD.

Also you should consider making sure there are no NT 4.0 BDCs or DCs in
Production for that specific domain.

It is a legitimate concern. I would ensure all the users in that domain are
migrated first.
