Exchange 2003 standard and Enterprise |
|
|
We currently have Exchange Server 2003 standard edition in our company. We
had numerous problems with the priv file so we decided to get the Enterprise
version. now I have 2 servers onsite, one with standard and the other with
the enterprise version loaded on it, I want to run both servers parallel on
the network but I am unsure how to correctly set everything up to do so.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks!

Not sure what you mean by running both servers in parallel.
Both servers can, of course, exist in the same Administrative Groups.
If you mean both should host a copy of mailboxes or mailbox stores and if
one server goes down the other one should take over transparently, such
functionality is not natively available in current versions of Exchange. You
may have to look at 3rd party solutions like DoubleTake, or solutions from
NAS/SAN vendors like EMC and NetApp for replication.
You could implement a cluster solution using 2 Exchange servers with shared
storage (shared SCSI, iSCSI, FC). That could provide protection against
server failure, but the Store (and the shared storage where it resides) is
still a single point of failure. Should you go that route, you would have to
start afresh - cluster setup requires planning and your existing Exchange
servers cannot be joined or form a cluster.

Thank You! you answered my question perfectly. I was trying to run them
together in a cluster but could not figure out why it was not working.
Tell me how to make them exist in the same Admin Group. For some reason I am
unable to add the new server to the group. i will look at the other vendors
per your suggestion.
Thanks again.

If you install a second Exchange server in the same Exchange Organization,
it should've installed it in the same Admin Group (unless you explicitly
created a new Admin Group and selected it during installation). Once
installed you can't move a server between Admin Groups.
Administrative Groups are admin. boundaries, not related to any kind of
clustering or load-balancing.
