Can recieve external mail but not internal mail |

Can anyone help? my organisation can recieve mail from our external provider via a proxy, but we cannot send or recive mail within the organisation on the .local mail accounts. Everything seems to be working ok and the messages are placed in the sent boxes but then just seems to dissapear with no error messages or ending up in the bad mail folder!
I am working on a system with
Windows Server 2003
Exchange Server 2003
Outlook 2003
SQL Server 2005
This all happened when I tried to put on WSS 2.0 and e-mail was not being sent because port 25 was blocked by mcaffee anti virus. I changed the rule in mcaffee and changed the settings on the SMTP virtual server as required by Sharepoint and then this happened.
I feel like I am banging my head against a brick wall and getting nowhere, so any help anyone could give would be greatly appreciated.
