Hi, My company had 2 divisions. First one (main1) had its own exchange storage group something like main1.com and all email accounts/ users on that domain (main1.com) would be there. Ssecond would be (second2) and same type like first. My company sold second division. The exchange admin deleted all the emails/users from that second storage group, however that second division now has their own exchange somewhere else. When anyone from main1 tryes to send emails to second2 even thou they now have their own exchange server we get a 5.1.1 this is the exact error :

The following recipient(s) could not be reached:

user1@second2.com on 4/15/2009 6:01 PM
The e-mail account does not exist at the organization this message was sent to. Check the e-mail address, or contact the recipient directly to find out the correct address.
<mail.main1.com #5.1.1>

Both our exchange admins have been let go and now i am stuck doing their jobs and i am only a Jr admin,, I have no knowledge what do do about this. Any help is greatly apreciated!

Manu,

5.1.1 errors are common NDR's. In this case it appears your Exchange server still believes it is the authoritative email server for your 2nd division's domain, so email is not leaving your server and going out into the internet to see the MX records at the DNS hosting company for the 2nd division...meaning email is never being directed to the new Exchange server.

It sounds as if your Exchange admin may have deleted the mailboxes for the 2nd division, but there's a possiblity there may have been something left behind in Active Directory that causes the server to believe this domain's email is hosted with your server.

This is a bigger possiblity:

The NK2 files, which is a file in Outlook that stores any email previously sent (autoname resolution - when you start typing in someone's email) is still pointing to the old IP address for those email addresses for the 2nd division...AND any replies to old email from the 2nd division will contain headers with the "old" IP address for those email addresses, thus you are getting 5.1.1 NDR's because this IP address no longer exists on your server.

Resolution:
Delete the NK2 files on each workstation or make sure everyone types the email addresses manually. To be safe you may want to delete the email addresses from the GAL and reenter them. Also, no one should reply to old email before division 2 separated from your company.

I hope this explanation helps and I hope the resolution at least points you in the right direction. Let me know! Very Happy

Thank you for the help . You said "it appears your Exchange server still believes it is the authoritative email server for your 2nd division's domain, so email is not leaving your server and going out into the internet to see the MX records at the DNS hosting company for the 2nd division...meaning email is never being directed to the new Exchange server. " I think this is why this is happening. Our old admin did delete all the mailboxes. How do i go about fixing this so the email goes out to the internet to look for new server? Thank you for all the help!

Manu,

Have you tried sending a test message to the second division after deleting the NK2 file and completely typing the address of the recipient? Because of message headers I believe this is the real problem.

If that does not work here is an article on removing an accepted domain from the Exchange Management Console:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa997275.aspx

Let me know if this was helpful to you! Wink

Yes I have tried by just typing in a email address and same result. Even new users at the second division which were never on OUR exchange i can't send to.
