Exchange on a seperate server than the SMTP server |

OK guys forgive the simple question as I am a web developer not a network guy and I am working on behalf of my client. Here is my issue. We have a server running mailenable enterprise that is handling all mail traffic for the domain as well as other domains. This has been working fine for 3 years. Now the company wanted to add exchange so they bought a new server just for exchange. We brought a guy in and he installed it and it appears to be working fine except.... Yeah there is always an exception. They want only a few people in the company to be able to use exchange so the email will still come in from the other server and we would expect the exchange server to check the mail server for the emails which it does every 15 min. It will bring in the emails from the other server however exchange will not send emails to anyone within the same domain because it says the user doesn't exist which in the exchange world is true they don't exist on the exchange server. Emails are sent no problem from exchange to other users who use exchange.
So the long winded question is, is this possible to do what they want to do? The guy who installed it wants another $1500 to make it work, but he is not sure it can be done.
Sorry if I am not clear. Please feel free to reply with additional questions.
