Hello all,

We run win2k and exch2k with a single forest and AD domain. We may be
wanting to create a new forest (due to the org wanting the name changed), if
we make a new forest and migrate the user etc into it, what do we do with
exchange? Can we leave it and migrate mailboxes between forests to a new
exchange server?

Should we upgrade our AD to win2k3 and use the renaming tool to change the
domain name and upgrade exchange to 2k3 instead of migrating?

Any help, as always much appreciated

It would be a hell of a lot less hastle to upgrade and change rather
than migrate.

I have the docs here for an upgrade and domain name change, I suppose the
only thing is being able to put forward the costs and hope the powers that be
would go for paying for win2k3 and exch2k3.

BTW, we run exch2k ent, could we install a exch2k3 server and migrate the
mailboxes before the domain upgrade and rename?

Thanks for your help, Andrew

This may help:
http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/Domain-Rename.html

And also, according to this:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/downloads/domainrename.mspx

You have to be running Exchnage 2003 SP1 in order to properly rename the
forest with Exchange installed.

Thanks for all your help chaps, one more......can you move mailboxes between
forests? if we migrated to a new forest, can we access mail in the old
forest and migrate the mailboxes to a new server in the new forest, would it
have to use the same org name?

If you have Exchange 2003 in your new forest, it has a nice tool called
"Migration Wizard". While it can be used for a number of things, moving
mailboxes between forests is something that it can be used for. Do a search
for it by name and I am sure you will come up with some documentation. Below
will get you started:
