Exchange 2003 on Windows 2003 Server |

We've just changed over from Lotus Notes to Exchange 2003 on W2k3 server. (I
believe we're also implementing Active Directory now too.)
I would like to use Eudora (for just myself) as I did in a previous life when I
was the email/network admin. Eudora uses either POP3 or IMAP. When I did this
before, Exchange was 5.0/5.5, and I seem to remember geting Exchange to
communicate via POP3 wasn't any big deal...
Now I'm the DB Admin, in a small shop. (All our jobs tend to overlap.) The
person handling Exchange says that enabling POP3 *IS* a *big* deal. He's
talking something about the POP3 capability is part of the OS, and not Exchange.
I don't know whether he doesn't understand how it really works, and is BSing me,
or what. I don't care how Exchange talks to the ISP, I'm just talking about my
mail client talks to Exchange.
I've read in previous posts in this group that sometimes people have trouble
with POP3 and IMAP. Sometimes it seems to be as simple as remembering to set
the services to start automatically, and sometimes not.
What I'm hoping is that someone out there is familiar with this setup and can
provide information to help us (ok, me) get Exchange to and Eudora to talk to
each other.
Also...
When I tried to setup Outlook Express, temporarily, it appeared that it uses
POP3 too. (So I couldn't use it either.) If I'm correct, wouldn't POP3 be
turned on by default?

Configuring POP and IMAP in Exchange 2003 is almost the same and
almost as hastle free. The POP and IMAP services are stopped and
disabled by default. All you need to is to set the services to auto
and then start them.
Use Exchange System Manager to start the POP Virtual Server (and
IMAP). You will then be able to connect perfectly well.
SMTP sending is a little different as well. Because Exchange 2003 is
relay secure by default you just need to change the permissions on the
VSI so that the POP/IMAP users can submit and if necessary relay
messages through the server. |
