Communication between outlook and exchange 2003 |

Could some one please tell me or point me to a site where I'll be able to
find out how does outlook communicate with exchange over a normal private
network.
I've installed 2 pc's with Server 2003 Enterprise. The one as DC and the
other as a stand alone server with Exchange 2003 the way it's described in
the Sybex book "Mastering Exchange 2003 Server", but I've been having
problems connecting outlook to exchange. The message that I get is "The name
could not be resolved. The action could not be completed". When I press the
check name.
I've reinstalled the pc's towice thinking maybe I've left some step out, but
with out any luck.
Got DNS and WINS running. Did the dcdiag and netdiag before the exchange
installation passed everything.
I reckon its some configuration or somewhere on the process of validating
the user's name.
Please help.

1) If I assume that you installed Outlook on the Microsoft Exchange 2003
server, then I would say don't do that. Microsoft does not
support/recommend this type of configuration.
2) Assuming that you mean you have a 3rd machine (e.g. Windows 2000/XP
workstation) that has Outlook on it and you are getting this error, I would
say you need to reinstall TCP/IP. This error might mean that you are
missing some RPC registry entries and reinstalling the TCP/IP stack will fix
it.
Outside of that, you may wish to state which version of Outlook you are
trying to connect with.

I have a 3rd machine with windows xp and it gives me the same msg with
Outlook 2000 as with Outlook 2003.
When I use Exchange Server Connection Status of Outlook 2003 it connects
well to the directory.
And when I do a "Check Name" it gives me the msg very quick, so I guess that
the DNS is configured well and communicating fine.
It's just the validating the name to a mailbox or something to that area.
As you mentioned about the tcp/ip reinstallation, I find it strange as I've
reinstalled it a few times and have used different machines.
But there could be a problem with the RPC communication.

what r u putting in for the username? (after creating an account, i
generally wait about 5 to 15 minutes to give RUS a chance to stamp the user
object with exchange props. from there i use the UPN for the mailbox name.)
