Hi,

I need to know if both scenarios will work to complete an exchange 5.5
migration to exchange 2003. (we are a single site)
We will be in the process of migrating from windows nt /exch 5.5 to Windows
2003 AD / exch 2003, but are waying up the pros and cons with regards to
carrying out and inplace or parallell migration.

1.If we choose to carry out a parallel migration, assuming we have completed
the migration tasks..admt user/groups migrated...domain functional level set
to windows 2003.- and all is well!

If we have completed all tasks and then need to concentrate on exchange 5.5
upgrade, can we introduce a new exchange 2003 server into the AD domain, and
join the exchange 2003 into the existing exch 5.5 site..
Can we then migrate mailboxes etc ......what procedures do we need to carry
out.

2. If we decide to carry out an inplace upgrade on the NT4 domain (mixed
mode)...assuming all has gone well and we just need to introduce the new
exch 2003 box (we will have a new exch 2003 box).

can we introduce the new exch 2003 box to the existing exch 5.5 site follwed
by migrating mailboxes etc....

please advise, need to basically move from exch 5.5 to (new box) exch 2003
in the simplist form.

Regards Ray

No. An Exchange Server can not be part of two different environments. In
other words, if you created a paralell environment, it would be a seperate
Forest and a seperate Exchange org. This would be an inter org migration.
The biggest problem is getting the client to connect to the new environment.
You need to modify the profile. If you have a small number of users you can
do it manualy. For a large number, use the profile modification tool from
microsoft, or script it.

This is possible.
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/exchange/2003/Library/DepGuide.mspx
is s a good place to start. You will need the ADC etc.

Simplist is the inplace upgrade, but not always the best, depending on the
stability of the exisitng environment.

Ray:

Please read
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/exchange/2003/library/depguide.mspx
and test everything in a lab. If you have 1 domain and 1 Exchange 5.5 site,
and plan to keep your existing domain, then there's no need to use ADMT.
ADMT is for migrating users to a different domain.

Below are the basic steps that I would suggest.

1) Upgrade to Windows 2003 functional level for the forest and domain
2) Install a new Exchange 2003 server into the existing 5.5 site
3) Gradually move mailbox, PFs, system folders, and connectors to the
Exchange 2003 server
4) Decommission the Exchange 5.5 server and switch to native mode Exchange
2003. IMPORTANT: make sure you read
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;822450 before you
remove the 5.5 server for good.

There might be some confusion with the terms "parallel" and "in-place."
Regarding Exchange, parallel usually means you set up the new server into
the same site instead of upgrading the existing server. In-place means you
upgrade the existing Exchange 5.5 server itself. I always advocate parallel
upgrades because you can always remove the new server if there are any
problems. If you do an in-place upgrade and run into problems, it will take
a lot of work to undo everything, and sometimes you can't really undo
everything cleanly, which will leave a lot of extra baggage that could creep
up later on and cause weird problems.

My company has one 5.5 site with one server. I used the parallel method and
added the new Exchange 2003 server to the site. I'm at least 80% done with
the upgrade and haven't run into any major problems other than
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=843545, which was corrected with the
hotfix mentioned.

Martin
