Outlook pst to Exchange |
|
|
Hi!
Whats the best/easiest way to "move" users from their local outlook use
(.pst file) to exchange 2003? Have just installed Exchange 2003 and now we
have about 50 users with different outlook versions (97,2000,2002 and 2003)
and a just a handful with OE. With "move" I mean that they will start using
exchange and get their old mail with them.

1. If at all possible, get everyone on OL2003. I believe you get licenses
for OL2003 with E2003....check. Do not use OL97 - it was very buggy even at
release. OL2003 will make your life as an admin MUCH easier and the users
will like the features.
2. You'll probably want to visit each client anyway, one reason being that
they they all have local PST files and you'd need to get those all on the
server in a central location & rename them appropriately (alias.pst) if you
wanted to use Exmerge on the server. This may not be worth it with only that
number of users...
Set up new mail profiles for the users that contain the Exchange server
mailbox only. Either open the PST file (file | open...) and select/copy
needed items to the folders in the mailboxes, or use file | import....
import sometimes causes problems, so I don't recommend it. Make sure you've
set default mailbox quotas on the store before you do any of this. Don't
import/copy in everything unless they don't have much or you may exceed the
quota.
3. For OE, you need to export from OE to Outlook on the computer in
question, and manually import the address book (wab file) if they use it.
Exmerge is very handy, but
a) it really sounds like you're going to have to visit desktops anyway -
b) the PST files may be large enough that they won't be entirely importable
without exceeding quotas, and if you don't have Enterprise, you're limited
to 16GB on your mailbox store
c) it won't work for OE
More info on exmerge here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/174197
(works for E2003 although it isn't listed) |

Thanks for a very good answer. Yes I have had a look att exmerge and it
seems a bit "too much". We do have Enterprise version cause of the 16Gb
limit, so thats not a problem. Yes I have to visit every client.
If I understood you right I can configure outlook to have the old .pst and a
connection to the new mail account on exchange side by side? And from
outlook just copy mail from pst to exchange account? Drag and drop maybe?

It's a great utility, but yeah, since you have to 'touch' every workstation
anyway, may not be appropriate.

Good, but you still need quotas.

Create a new mail profile that has only Exchange in it. Use file |
open....to open the PST file. Select what you want in the PST folders,
right-click+hold, drag & release to the Exchange mailbox folder you wish,
choose Copy.
(If you use Move, and something goes wrong, you're out of luck & your data
is gone - might be a good idea to back up the PST file first anyway).
