I'm installing Exchange 2003 on Windows server 2003, many peopler said to
remove the space in the TEMP directory can solve the error code "Error code
0XC1037AE6 (31462): Extending the schema in the Active Directory failed.
Please consult the error log LDIF.ERR in your TEMP directory.", but the error
still comes up after removed the SPACE from the TEMP directory, and I also
tried enable/disable the 8.3 file.
Here is the error message in logging file 'LDIF.ERR'
Entry DN:
CN=Mail-Recipient,CN=Schema,CN=Configuration,DC=dev2,DC=availsolutions,DC=com
changetype: modify
Attribute 0) mayContain:assistant
1: Attribute or value exists, entry skipped.
I tried to modify the active directory schema attribute 'Mail-Recipient',
but it won't allow you to do that because it's the default AD schema.
I really got all prerequirements for exchange server 2003 like:
# NET Framework
# ASP.NET
# Internet Information Services (IIS)
# World Wide Web Publishing Service
# Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) service
# Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP) service
Does anybody know whatever I can do for this case?
Thanks,
-Tony

We're experiencing the same problem, attempting to run ForestPrep from the
Exchange 2003 SP1 CD on a 2003 DC with SP1 applied.
We've tried:
Adjusting the TEMP and TMP env variables so they contain no spaces.
Ensuring we've got a 0 in the reg key for disabling NTFS 8.3 name creation
(and tried it with a 1 just for kicks).
Adjusting the reg key to allow Schema Updates and rebooting (althought we've
already extended the schema for SMS2003 and a third-party tool with no
problem).
All the steps in KB328661.
We get the same result in our would-be-production single domain forest of
several DCs, as well as on a single DC single domain/forest in our test
environment.
In our first run-through of tests we ran ForestPrep on the 2003AD prior to
the installation of W03SP1 and had no problems. We're certain that SP1 did
something that's causing us these headaches but we don't want to start from
scratch as all the DCs have now been moved out to various locations and would
be a major pain to start over again in rebuilding the domain. Fortunately,
no users have been migrated into it yet, but that was scheduled to be
imminent.
Any and all help will be appreciated. We're wanting to call MS PSS but by
the time the bureaucrats get the PO processed, Longhorn could be shipping.

While I was out of the office, a coworker talked to MS (apparently we had
already purchased support incidents) and they had him try it again with the
Exchange 2003 RTM CD and it worked. He'd tried the same thing before I did
all of my testing, with witnesses and it hadn't worked.
Problem resolved, though we don't really know what we did wrong the first
time.
