Hi!

1) Is is a good/bad thing to use cached mode on every pc, even desktops?
2) Is outlook faster with an ost file?
3) How about security? Is it more safe not to use "cached mode"?
4) other advantages/disavantages?

1) It is a matter of opinion & perception, I like cached mode on desktops
because the client is working out of the OST rather than round-tripping the
server for each item that is worked.

2) Cached mode = Offline Storage on steriods. (Cached mode is telling
Outlook to live from the OST/OAB files. Only changes are replicated between
client/server)

3) Security is only as good as the desktop security. (If user leaves desk
and locks desktop = good)

4) About the only common complain I see in regards to cached mode exchange
is that users don't see changes to the GAL for 24 hours. This is normal
considering Outlook 2003 only updates the OAB file(s) once a day.

Key advantages to cached mode exchange is better use of the line and/or it
isolates the user from exchange/network outages. (e.g. If Exchange
disappears while Outlook 98/2000 are connected to it, the client hangs.
User generally has to kill Outlook and start again. Outlook 2003 UI pretty
much isolated from this and will reconnect quietly in the background.)

If you ever install a new server or change the Exchange Server name
you may have issues with updating the Outlook client to use
the new exchange server. Outlook Profiler has helped in these
instances.

That is probably the only negative I am aware of.

If you move mailboxes from Exchange server 1 to Exchange server 2, all
Outlook clients should automatically find the new server (presuming server1
is still up and running) - and I believe this won't hurt cached mode. And
changing an Exchange server name is extremely difficult and rarely advisable
anyway.

As long as both servers are still up, I have never had a problem with the
MAPI redirect. The same rules that applied for Outlook 2000 and Outlook XP
appear to apply for Outlook 2003.
