Retiring an Exchange 2000 server |
|
|
A few months ago, we were a Windows 2000 native domain, with a single
Exchange 2000 server in native mode. The children played, the sun shone,
and life was good.
We recently upgraded our domain to 2003 and Exchange to 2003. The Exchange
upgrade was purchasing a new server, installing 2k3, and migrating all users
and settings to the new server. Mail floxed, the children played, the sun
shone, and life was good.
We would now like to retire the Exchange 2000 box, but we are unable to do
so. When we shut down that server, users call us a few hours later (not
immediately) reporting odd slowdowns. Pauses when oipening messages. Some
users are unable to use Outlook at all. Others see no problems.
The system and application logs on the user machines, the 2000 server (when
its brough back online) and the 2003 server are all clean. I've double
checked the Exchange profiles for effected users to ensure nothing refers to
the retired server. I've searched the registry for references to the
retired server and find nothing. We always restort to binging the server
back online which immediately resolves our issues.
I realize this is a vague-ish post. Any suggestions as to where we can look
for? We would very much like to retire this server.

i'm assuming all mailboxes have been moved from the old server
there must still be info in AD that references that old server
you say you just shut it down, but if you uninstall exchange it will cleanly
remove itself from AD
try that and hopefully the children will be playing again, the sun will come
back out and life will be better

You may want to run through the checklist in this KB prior to
decommissioning the E2K server if it was first in the site:
307917 How to remove the first Exchange 2000 Server computer from the site
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=307917
We may not have replicated system folders (OAB, Schedule+ Free/Busy, etc)
off of the old server which clients are still looking for.
Cheers!
