The server is not operational
Facility: Win32
ID no: 8007203a
Microsoft Exchange Setup

Exchange Server 2003 running on Windows 2003 Standard. All current SPs are
installed.

For some reason, I am getting connection refused errors, LDAP not available
errors and the like. For example:
Task 'Keith Barrows - Receiving' reported error (0x800CCC92) : 'Your e-mail
server rejected your login. Verify your user name and password in your
account properties. Under Tools, click E-mail accounts. The server
responded: -ERR Unspecified error.'

I have run NetDiags and that reports all good (as far as I can tell). I can
reboot and get a good connection from my Outlook client to the server. Then
10 minutes later it's kaput again. It has run OK for the last 3 months. It
just seems to be getting worse and worse.

I am not a Sys Admin nor an Exch Admin. I am doing this partially to learn
and partially to support my own email. Any help is appreciated.

What's going on with the Active Directory?
Have you checked that?

Any additional software installed on that Exchange machine or the Active
Directory?

Active Directory is running fine. The only non-MS app running on my DC is a
small app for synching with the atomic clock. Otherwise, the apps running on
the DC are DNS and the other basic services that run on any server.

My Exchange Server has IIS running on it and 3 or 4 file shares. The load
on my network is minimal. My wife and daughter use their client machines
about 4 hours a day. Because email is so screwed up they have both dropped
to checking email once a day in the hopes they actually can get to it.

I should have asked earlier.
How are your clients configured? Are they in MAPI/Corporate mode or are you
using something different?

Do you get the same results if you use OWA (connect direct to the Exchange
server http://exchangeserver/exchange )??
That's important. I'm interested in seeing if you can access the mailstore
at all, or if it's just the client that's choking.

What else do you see in the application and system logs? Anything related
to hardware such as NIC or disk (I'm just covering the bases here based on
the idea that it all worked fine before)?

Wife's machine - Outlook 2003, Exchange for the main acct, SMTP/POP3 for 2
other accts
Daughter's machine - Outlook 2003, Exchange only
My laptop - Outlook 2003, SMTP/POP3 for 7 accts

OWA internal will work. I have a simple router and all port 80 traffic goes
to a web seperate server so am not exposing OWA outside (though I really do
want to do this). OWA will work as long as the server is not locked up...

dual proc IBM Netfinity Server and Web is on a no name single proc server.
(Both servers are rack mountable, weigh in at 45 pounds and are 8U boxes.)

double check this machine as well as the connection between it and the
Exchange machine. The events you show are not indicating healthy
communication between Exchange and the directory.
tti-dc-202.sol3.int

I'd start by resolving this issue:

Quote:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: MSExchangeDSAccess
Event Category: Topology
Event ID: 2102
Date: 12/25/2004
Time: 2:13:23 AM

responding:
tti-dc-202.sol3.int

Netdiag, dcdiag, and policycheck would be good places to start. They'll
give some good information, although that permissions thing is a little
strange. I'd still start with verifying the AD with those tools from both
the Exchange and AD servers. The fact that it comes and goes sounds like
some sort of state check that is failing then working, then failing, then
working. Permissions and settings would be of concern.

One last question: this isn't by chance selected as a front end server is
it?

In a way, that's good news. You have a place to start.

At this point, it's not possible to tell if the problem is with the ticket
or with netdiag. http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=870692
This kb should give some help in narrowing it down though.

Nothing down this road. Kerberos has it's tickets...

Exchange mailbox servers can be designated as a Front-End server or a
Back-End server. A front-end server is typically used for abstracting the
data store location from the client. Typical usage would be as an OWA only
server or as a POP3 termination point. The symptoms you describe would
occur if the Exchange server was selected to be a FE server and yet had
mailboxes on it.

The server properties, general tab has this check box on it. Looks like
figure 2 if you've selected it.

In that case, let's recap (please correct if I miss anything or get it
wrong):

**Symptoms presented: Pop client is sometimes unable to connect and retrieve
mail. **

LDAP and other errors get reported. A restart of the client seems to clear
this up, but this unworkable.
OWA client works when connecting direct to the mailbox server.
Exchange is reporting some errors in the application logs (not sure how
current or relevant to this situation however).
No errors reported in the system logs.
Netdiag and DCDIAG report no errors (after verifying the kerberos issues
reported, they were found to be netdiag related vs. real errors).

**Items looked at:**
Network issues = none found
Active directory issues = none found
Hardware issues = no issues with hardware being reported, although that is
not completely ruled out.
Configuration issues with Exchange = not yet investigated.
Client issues = not yet investigated.

Is this about right? Am I missing anything?

Al

P.S. I realize your DNS configuration passed. I do however suggest that you
configure it differently. I don't think you really want to have its
internal DNS resolution specified and then have it fail over to external DNS
servers. The reason I say that is because it's a little odd to do it that
way. A better way to do it, is to realize that without the internal DNS,
there's no reason to exist at all, for Exchange that is. Exchange will stop
functioning properly without Active Directory, so why not make it so that
all clients use the Active Directory DNS and then let it forward to the
external hosts? It would be a bit easier and more reliable than what you
have configured.

69.93.53.229 <<<<<****remove
these and instead put them into the forwarders section of the DNS host
that AD is using (host is 192.168.2.202).

Just a suggestion of course.

Well, after removing one machine from the network (a client machine and not
part of the problem) I was forced to install the Outlook Client on another
client machine. Now, I am getting the same behaviors and am going nuts!

Load Outlook 2003, connect via POP3:
----------------------------------------------
Task 'Keith Barrows - Receiving' reported error (0x800CCC92) : 'Your e-mail
server rejected your login. Verify your user name and password in your
account properties. Under Tools, click E-mail accounts. The server
responded: -ERR Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.'
--
(all accounts are receiving the same message)

Try using Remote Desktop to login to the Exch Server
Get a RPC error.

Try running Exch MMC - fails

Reboot Exch Server

Try running Exch MMC - Everything running fine.

Look at event logs
multuple connect to DC failures

Reboot DC and then reboot Exch
Everything appears to be running on those 2 machines

Reboot client machine
Start Outlook
Still getting the same error (The server responded: -ERR Logon failure:
unknown user name or bad password.)

I'm getting seriously upset with the complete flakeyness of Exchange!!
