microsoft outlook only connect to the exchange backend serve |
|
|
Hello,
Microsoft outlook 2002 only connect to the exchange backend server. If
i access the frontend via IMAP/POP3/OWA everything works fine.
If i try to access via "Outlook as an Exchange-Client" i got an
error ("server unavailable"). If i access the backend, it works.
This is by design ??? Exchange front end servers will not proxy for
Outlook (MAPI) clients. Why??? What can i do???

Front-end servers only proxy IMAP, POP3, HTTP, and when configured RPC over
HTTP. So the basic answer to your question is no, front-end servers will not
proxy MAPI connections.

For MAPI? Absolutely, but so many holes will need to be open that its a
super high security risk (to the point that it is not a realistic option),
but you do have other options:
1. Implement Outlook Web Access or RPC over HTTPS in a Frontend\backend
design with an ISA box in a DMZ (best configuration)
2. Implement Outlook Web Access or RPC over HTTPS in a frontend\backend
design and put the frontend in a DMZ (second best choice).
Outlook Web Access is probably going to be the easiest to rollout and if you
do it, I would highly recommend that you use an ISA 2004 server in the DMZ
and not an Exchange frontend server (but an FE in the DMZ works, but its much
less secure because of the ports that will have to be opened to get to the
internal network so that the FE server can talk to an AD DC).
