All of my users (on an Exchange 2003 server) get a "Can't open this item"
error when trying to open messages in their inbox.

This happens with messages that previously opened prior to this error
showing up. This happens with new messages as well.

I have exhausted all know sources for this problem (I am unwilling to pay
for answers from certain websites) and have a bunch of angry users at my door.

Server : MS Exchange 2003
Client : MS Outlook 2003

This problem started showing up about 3-5 days ago.

I have defragged and repaired the database using eseutil.exe to no avail.

I have Symantec Anti-Virus for Exchange (v9.0) running on the server as well.

Any help in this will be greatly appreciated and thank you in advance.

As an update to this message, I have tried disabling the anti-virus program
on the workstations and servers and it doesn't seem to help.

What happens when you remove the anti-virus app(s) on the server? How many
anti-virus applications are installed on the server and are they all
Exchange-aware?

What else is on the server?

What else is in the event logs?

Exchange loads properly after unloading the AV software on the server. No
error messages on the server pertaining to Exchange.

All error messages are coming from the client side.

It is Symantec Anti-Virus v9.0 and yes it is Exchange aware.

Thanks for the assistance.

Mike, what happens if you change clients? Say OWA for example?
Do you have the same symptoms?

Unfortunately, my OWA has never worked properly and no one really every
needed it so I just ignored it (you can log in, but it gives a link to all
folders, mail items but does not bring up a graphical page).

What about a POP or IMAP client then?
Although you should fix OWA, at least at http://fqdn_hostname/exchange
It's possible the problem is related, although given the time references and
effort, it's not worth chasing just yet. Better to confirm with POP/IMAP
than to go fixing that just yet IMHO.

This is the error I get when attempting to hit it with a pop client

Message number 1 could not be retrieved. Account: '<server name>', Server:
'<server name>', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR Unrecognized internal
error: 0xc0090081', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90,
Error Number: 0x800420CD

I was able to get 2 messages (of the 38 in my box) but those corrispond to
the messages I can read through outlook.

Thanks.

Update to my last message.

I did get OWA working (Finally) and I got basically the same result as
within Outlook itself. What happens is that it comes up with a page not
available error instead of the "Can't open this item."

Thanks

How about this then:
1) Try uninstalling AV and seeing if you get same results
If so,
2) Try, with AV uninstalled, create a new account for testing purposes
3) Create mail in that account and see if you can access it.
4) Double check the Event Logs for errors. If your users can't retrieve
mail, then something somewhere should be recorded in a 24 hour period. If
you can't see all entries for 24 hours, modify the event log settings to
make them larger and not wrap.

Update to my last message.

I did get OWA working (Finally) and I got basically the same result as
within Outlook itself. What happens is that it comes up with a page
not
available error instead of the "Can't open this item."

Thanks

Exchange loads properly after unloading the AV software on the
server.
No
error messages on the server pertaining to Exchange.

All error messages are coming from the client side.

It is Symantec Anti-Virus v9.0 and yes it is Exchange aware.

Thanks for the assistance.

Completely uninstalling the AV software did the trick. I'm not sure why just
disabling the services didn't work as well, but that doesn't really matter at
this point.

Thank you to everyone for your assistance.

Sounds like you need to get a fix from the vendor? It might be a good idea
to post the results of that :)
