Replacing Exchange 2003 server with another |
|
|
I have an existing Exchange 2003 server installed. I want to install 2003 on
a newer server and have it become the new Exchange server, and I'll
decommision the first one.
Do I just do a straight install of a new server, and then run the migration
wizard?
Any advice is appreciated.

you can install the new box, get exchange up and running, then move all the
mailboxes over (make sure mail delivery, etc is working) and uninstall the
old exchange server and that should do it

When I go to install Exchange onto the new server, there are 2 options: (1)
Install first Exchange server, (2) install additional exchange server
Since I'm going to be essentially replacing the server, which install method
should I select?

you would want to install additional exchange server

Just to add to Seth's post, please follow the steps in the following article
prior to decommissioning the other E2K3 server if it was the first in the
AG:
822931 How to remove the first Exchange Server 2003 computer from the
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=822931
As a side note, if you wished to keep the same server-name for the new
server, you could follow the steps in this article:
822945 How to Move Exchange 2003 to New Hardware and Keep the Same Server
Name
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=822945
A downside to this would be the fact there would be an interruption to mail
as the store would be offline for a certain amount of time - it is
preferable to bring up a new server with a new name, and then move mailboxes
(and public folders, etc) as this would not impact users.
Hope this helps!
