HELP !!!! Exchange to host multiple and different companies' |
|
|
Hi there,
I need to setup an Exchange server to host the mailboxes from different
companies. Have you got any information on how to set this up ?
I wondered if all I had to do is point the MX records to the Exchange server ?
How can I create the recipient policies ? Based on group membership or
something else ?
I think I will have to put this server in DMZ. But I think an Exchange
server needs an Active Directory !!??!!! How can I design it ?
Any help is VERY appreciated !
Thanks a lot in advance

Xavier,
The scenario you are addressing is a hosting scenario, and this is possible
with Exchange 2003. The overall steps to accomplish this are:
1. Windows Server 2003 Domain Controller
2. Windows Server 2003 Member Server with Exchange 2003
The following steps assume your AD and Exchange 2003 installation are
functioning properly. Yes this means having DNS functioning properly with
the relevant MX record.
1. Create an OU for each company you wish to host
2. Create a Universal Security Group, be sure to Create an Exchange e-mail
address
3. Open the properties for the Universal Group just created and change the
SMTP address to alias@hosteddomain.com
4. Now that the group is in place, create a Recipient Policy in Exchange so
all users that belong to the group get the address hosteddomain.com. If you
are going to want to use OWA, there are other steps that need to be taken.
5. Add a UPN Suffix to the OU created above. Requires using ADSI edit and
adding hosteddomain.com to the uPNSuffixes attribute.
6. At this point you are able to create Users in the OU, and they'll have
access to their domain.
If you do a Google search using keywords like Shared Hosting Exchange, you
will find more resources. These steps give the overall picture of what
needs to happen.

Wahou !
Thanks a lot for all these informations ! Very helpful !!!
More precisions : I only have 1 server for installation of Exchange 2003.
Can I set it as DC also, or is it better to install another Win2k3 server and
set this other server as DC ?
Can I put this (these) server(s) in a DMZ, or is it better to have it (them)
in a LAN, and "publish" the mail services ? How could I do that ?
Concerning the Universal Group, what do you mean exactly ? I understood :
- if my Active Directory hosting domain is hosting.lan, and if I host a
company domain named company.lan, I will have to change the SMTP address of
this group to <name_of_group>@company.lan ?
What is this email address for exactly ? Do I need it to set email addresses
for clients ?
Sorry for these questions being so "dumb", I'm not really a beginner, but
this architecture is the first one of this kind I install, and it's very
disturbing for me .....
Thank you VERY MUCH !!!!!!!!
Take care

Hey Xavier,
It would really be a better scenario to have Exchange 2003 separate from the
DC, especially since you plan on hosting multiple domains. Can it be done
on one server? Yes it certainly can, but not an ideal setup.
