All,
I am running an NTBackup task on a clustered Exchange 2003 environment with
Windows 2003 Server Enterprise. I set it up so that the Task Scheduler
service is clustered with the rest of the exchange services. I then created
a scheduled task to run a backup of the Exchange database each evening on
the active server. Is this a good idea? Would it hurt anything to run the
backup on the inactive server?

Thanks,
Pair

Since I have no tested doing a backup with NTBackup locally on both nodes, I
am guessing it will work, with errors.

Every night one of the two backups will fail because they don't own the
resource. For example the server that owns the cluster group will be able to
backup the Quorum disk resource, the passive node won't be able to do that.

Cheers,

Rod

If the task scheduler is clustered together with Exchange services as
TwistedPair described, then only one backup process will start every night
(the one on a passive node will not start at all since task scheduler is not
running on this node). Hence, there will be no failing backups.

Boris
