If you are running Windows Server 2003, did you already follow 817064? Did
you install Network DTC before you installed an configured the cluster
resource?

I made the same mistake and corrupted the Cluster hive for the MSDTC

Is the DTC service set to Auto or Manual startup (in services.msc)?
When you say that the cluster was configured before the article was
followed, what do you mean exactly? If it is what I think, then the
procedure to resolve this issue is to copy the following folder to the
cluster quorum drive: c:\winnt\system32\msdtc. Once you have an MSDTC
folder with the appropriate contents on this drive, it should work as
expected.
Please post back here with the results.

The cluster was built and running then we started to have MSDTC problems. It
was fully functional for a while.
The service is set to manual in services.msc
The cluster was built before the Network DTC was enabled like the article
says.
The log file was already on the shared disk under MSDtc folder, however the
log file was deleted and there is no backup and the msdtc -resetlog function
will not work.
We are looking to probably rebuild this cluster as it is just in a testing
phase but it will set us back considerably.
Any help is appreciated.

The service is set to manual in services.msc
The cluster was built before the Network DTC was enabled like the article

The log file was already on the shared disk under MSDtc folder, however
the
log file was deleted and there is no backup and the msdtc -resetlog

We are looking to probably rebuild this cluster as it is just in a
testing

Any help is appreciated.

Re: MSDTC Failing in a cluster |

Thanks for that information. Does the cluster service account have the
Manage auditing and security log user rights? This is required for the DTC
to function in a cluster.
If you find that the account does have this right, and you don't mind doing
some extended work on your cluster, there is another possible way to resolve
this. I have not tested this, but I believe this procedure should work for
you:
Delete the DTC resource
Delete MSDTC shared folder from the quorum disk
On Node 1:
* Stop Cluster service
* Remove Enable network DTC access
* Run msdtc -uninstall
* Verify success in event log
* Delete registry keys:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CID
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSDTC
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSDTC
* Reboot
* Reinstall Enable network DTC access (at this point, the DTC resource
should be created and come online)
Node 2
* Stop Cluster service
* Evict node from cluster
* Remove Enable network DTC access
* Run msdtc -uninstall
* Verify success in event log
* Delete registry keys
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CID
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSDTC
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSDTC
* Reboot
* Reinstall Enable network DTC access
* Verify service started, registry keys created
* Rejoin cluster
Then fail the cluster group over to the second node to verify that the DTC
resource comes online successfully on the second node. After that, reboot
both servers and verify that the resource would fail over properly to both
nodes with the rest of the group.

Also, if a DTC resource exists, are all nodes possible owners?
And, as an aside, have any modifications been made to the default security

Did you copy the contents of c:\winnt\system32\msdtc to the MSDTC
folder
on
the quorum disk, and then try to bring the resource online?

The cluster was built and running then we started to have MSDTC
problems.
It
was fully functional for a while.
The service is set to manual in services.msc
The cluster was built before the Network DTC was enabled like the
article
says.
The log file was already on the shared disk under MSDtc folder,
however
the
log file was deleted and there is no backup and the msdtc -resetlog
function
will not work.
We are looking to probably rebuild this cluster as it is just in a
testing
phase but it will set us back considerably.
Any help is appreciated.

Is the DTC service set to Auto or Manual startup (in services.msc)?
When you say that the cluster was configured before the article was
followed, what do you mean exactly? If it is what I think, then
the
procedure to resolve this issue is to copy the following folder to
the
cluster quorum drive: c:\winnt\system32\msdtc. Once you have an
MSDTC
folder with the appropriate contents on this drive, it should work
as
expected.
Please post back here with the results.

Rodney,
I am running this cluster on Windows Sevrer 2003 and I did follow
the
article however the cluster was configured before the article was
followed.
This was the recommendation that a consultant here provided us.
Please
advise
for the next spets.
Thank you,

If you are running Windows Server 2003, did you already follow

Did
you install Network DTC before you installed an configured the
cluster
resource?
