I am having a reverse DNS issue when some emails are sent. I noticed my
outbound mail is leaving on the IP of the NIC card which does not have a
public IP. I want it to leave on the Virtual ip which has a public ip
translation and reverse DNS. THis way I do not have to use two public ips. I
am using WIndows 2003 Server clustering with Exchange 2003 Enterprise.

In your Exchange SMTP Virtual Server, what IP address is defined?

Cheers,

Rod

It is the internal virtual IP

So, you have a multi-homed server? The packets come in on the public side
and leave on the private side? Can you explain more about your network?
Firewall? ISA? Default Gateway for the Exchange box, etc.

Rod

Bill -

This is by design. The listener is attached to the virtual IP, but the
primary IP associated with the SMTP virtual server is actually the host's
real IP address. I am not aware of any way to change this, as it's a
function of Winsock when the outbound connection is opened.

That said, I've seen this question before a number of times but I've never
really understood where the problem is. If you have a non-public IP on the
host, you're going to have to have used a non-public IP on the virtual IP as
well. In that case, you're going to be (presumably) NATting the address
whether it comes from the virtual IP or the NIC IP. Why not just NAT them
both through the same public IP address for outbound port 25?
