Hello,
I have a new set of PE 2850's from Dell along with a
PV220S that I'm planning on making our new Exchange
cluster. My thought is that in each of the nodes I will
simply RAID-1 a drive for the OS (no other drives
internally installed in either node) and that I would use
the Power Vault as the whole of my shared storage. In
the PV I currently have six 146GB (ID's 0-5) drives and I
would like to also mirror each of them (giving me a total
of 146x3=438GB of usable space). My questions are
whether or not this is a feasible solution for high
redundancy and generally if it's possible and if so,
whether I can do it with all of the drives sitting on the
same end of the PV (same controller) or if I'd need to
put three drives on each side of the PV.
Thanks,
Dan

RAID 10 is great and works great on that hardware. While it works, you will
not be following any best practices. Everything will have to be in the
cluster group, MSDTC, Clustering, and Exchange. You are better off carving
up the disks into a few logical drives. You can put MSDTC & Clustering
(Quorum) on one logical, Exchange with separate space for Logs and Databases
on two more logical. Some even like to give the MTA and SMTP there own
space. Depends if are concerned over fragmentation of the disks, and your
traffic amount. Lots to think about, answers will always depend on your
situation and need for space on any of Exchange areas.

Cheers,

Rod

Rod is right on this, and you also may want to consider having a look
through the "Optimizing Storage for Exchange 2003" guide for more specific
guidance to match the scalability and reliability you desire for this
server.
