OWA Exch 5.5 SP4 Hangs |

We are having problems with our OWA installation hanging. Below is the
error generated in our Application logs.
Server is running Exch 5.5 Sp4. Only the OWA module is loaded on the
server. OS is Win2kSP4. The server only hosts OWA. Nothing else is
running on the server. About every 30mins- 2hrs, the pages stop responding
and we sometimes get an error that it cant communicate the with exchange
server. Restarting the IIS server resolves the issue. Server is up to date
with patches and AV scans.
Any suggestions?

That's not good. You've got a problem that's quite rare, then. Do
any of your users report seeing any error messages displayed in their
browser? It might be worth trying the application protection setting
(Exchange VDir in IIS Manager) on each of its three values (Low,
Medium, High) for a while to see if it makes any difference.
Usually, if OWA 5.5 gets an issue that we don't see very often, it is
best to reinstall it, followed by Exchange SP4, and then the 818709
hotfix.

Thats what we have done already. We originally had this problem on our
older server. When we couldnt resolve the issue, we got a newer server,
faster, more memory, better speed Nic, etc. The current configuration is a
new server, new OS install, new Exchange 5.5 SP4 install, and new hotfix
install.
The users see an error on a blank browser page. It pops up a window that
says "Failed to connect to the Microsoft Exchange Server, servername.
Restarting the service corrects the problem.

Does this happen as soon as anyone tries to use OWA on this server, or
does it work for a while first? |

May work for an hour, may work for a few mins...It could even last 5 hrs.
Seems to happen more under heavy usage tho.

Are the mailboxes for these OWA users all on the same Exchange server,
or are they on different servers? If they are on different servers,
can you tell if the users who see it crash all have their mailboxes on
the same server? |

They are on different servers. When it hangs, the mailboxs are on different
servers also. |

Are there any firewalls between the OWA server and any of the mailbox
servers? It sounds like some RPC traffic is not getting through. |

Yes, there is a firewall between the OWA server and the exchange servers.
What should I look for in the RPC traffic?

There's probably nothing you would recognize by looking at it. All
you can do is to make a note of the OWA server IP address, all the
mailbox server addresses, and look at the firewall logs to see if
anything between mailbox and OWA is getting blocked. Or, you can be
proactive and configure the firewall and servers for these ports:

Firewall ports are open already.
