I have an ageing SBS 4.5 machine (Exchange 5.5), which isn't connected to the
outside world and has happily been serving mail from several Unix boxes for a
few years now. It is in the process of being replaced by a SBS 2003 machine.

On Friday I installed an HP LaserJet 4650dtn on it and rebooted. Following
this, Exchange will handle mail sent from Exchange mailboxes to Exchange
mailboxes, however, the mail from the Unix machines just seems to be
disappearing.

The other thing that happened when the printer was installed was that it
gobbled up most of my (meagre) remaining disk space which was reduced to
about 80Mb free. I've since freed up more and it's currenly got around 300Mb
free.

When the machine started up, several services were reported in the event log
as having not started, some of these (namely the exchange services) were
actually running, but RPC Locator and Task Scheduler weren't. I rebooted
again with the same result. I then started RPC Locator and Task Scheduler
manually, but still no joy.

Any help or suggestions would be most welcome.

Thanks,

Gary

Well, I've at least got the mail working again - the Internet Mail Service
was stopped. I started it manually and the backlog of mail came through.

It doesn't explain why all of the services report errors on start up (even
after freeing up some disk space).

I can live with the situation as it is at the moment, since the machine will
be replaced shortly, but if anybody wants to chip in their two-penneth, then
please feel free.

Regards,

Gary
