Re: Single E2k3 server to FE/BE solution. |

It really is that simple. However, there are some gotchas that might be
useful to consider here.
For example, all Exchange servers currently must be a part of the same
forest. That includes the FE server. Microsoft's recommendation is that
you don't extend your 'trusted network' forest to a DMZ but rather deploy a
different forest. FE servers don't work across forests.
If you're looking to follow best practice recommendations, that leaves you
in a bit of a pickle. :)
Was it me, and I only had one BE server, I'd likely deploy ISA server into
the DMZ in place of a FE server and publish the BE server's WEB page and any
other protocols that I needed. I wouldn't consider a FE server in the mix
until I had more than one BE server.
That's me though. YMMV.

I've hunted round for a good while on this and can't seem to find the
answer I'm looking for so any help would be much appreciated.
We currently have an E2k3 server on our internal network that we port
forward mail to through our firewall. We are moving to a new ISP and now
have a DMZ in our network topology. Ideally we would like to place a FE
E2k3 server in our DMZ and change our current E2k3 server to a BE server.
Is this simply a case of creating the FE server and performing the
necessary configuration on both servers? Or am I missing something here?
I've read through the exchange admin books we have and also scoured
through
some news archives but can't find any posts for this scenario.
Many Thanks,
Dave. |
