Migrating |
|
|
Hello.
I'm about to migrate from NT 4 PDC, to server 2003 Domain Controller and
from exchange 5.5, to
exchange 2003. Both are running on the same server today. Is the same
configuration recomended in server 2003 with exchange 2003?, and if, what
are the system reqirements?
If there's any special things to be aware of? I plan to use ADMT and Exmerge
to copy the information from the old domain/Exchsrv to a new Domain, to get a
pristine installation.

It is not recommended to have Exchange installed on a DC. Here is some
documentation that may help
875427 Global catalog server placement and ratios in an Exchange 2000 Server
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=875427
Once ADMT is done and your accounts have migrated to Win2k3, I would
intstall a new E2k3 member server into your 5.5 site and move mailboxes to
this new server using the E2k3 Deployment Tools.

Hope this helps

Take the recommendations with a grain of salt though (you did ask for
recommended and that's what you got). While it's not recommended to put
Exchange on a DC, it's also not expected that you'll have more servers than
you need for the sake of a KB article. Putting Exchange on a DC has the
detriment of short-circuiting the DS discovery processes built into Exchange
application and has added overhead on a single server. If you're only
running a small amount of users, I doubt you'll notice the impact if laid
out correctly on disk. Today's procs are able to handle quite a bit.
If you only need on DC, and one Exchange server, then use one DC and one
Exchange server. You'll have the same issues you would have had with
Exchange 5.x on a PDC before: if you lose either, you're toast and it's
tough to get them back from tape.
Will it work though? Yep. Happens all the time in small shops.
