Is there any 3rd party software that will allow you to recover deleted
emails without using a backup. I tried the using the recover deleted items
registry hack and saw that my retention period was at 0 so that didnt work.
I am using an Exchange 2k server with outlook 2003.

any suggestions.

Restore a previous days backup or use Quest (www.quest.com) Exchange

Recovery Manager to access mail before it got deleted.

I called quest and their software wont work cause they need a backup. What
happend was a user received an email and then deleted it and emptied their
mailbox. So unless my backups were running constantly ( which i have no clue
how that can be done) it wouldnt be on the tape. Can i find it from the
transaction logs. If so how do i go about that .

I see what you mean. I interpreted it that you had a backup but wanted

to recover the data without necessarily using that backup.

did he also delete it from the "dumpster"? if he did not, you should be
able to recover it via Outlook if you have DIR configured...

The mail was deleted then he emptied out the trash can. I didnt have the
retension period setup so the Delete recover email option doesnt work. Can I
recover email from logs.

If its an option just ask them to get it sent to them again and that
you'll put in a solution to resolve issues like this in the future ...

then setup the deleted items recovery period to suit your needs ... ive
got mine set to 30 days currently which works well for me.

I also have dumb users, but not the space as these users constantly
utilise the max 20mb message size!

Welll, that would make a difference :) I have policies making it so
anything over 2 MB in size is stopped, but not everyone can do that. I
also have a small group of users <Under 50>

would be nice, but the business swaps cad drawings and various other
items with customers, clients etc so that would be too restrictive for
our use.

My stars. Your mail store must be enormous. I don't do anything beyond 30
days, regardless of user intelligence!
