Size Limit for Exchange 2003 Standard Edition |

My exchange server is currently locked up at 16GB. I read the information on
the Microsoft Web Site as I can have 5 databased with a limit of 16GB EACH.
My vendor says no, that is not what it says, and I need to pay thousands more
to purchase the Enterprise Edition because the Standard Edition they sold me
3 weeks ago won't handle the volume. Please clarify the size limit for me.

I'd be very surprised if the published information from Microsoft was wrong,
as this would have caused a large number of complaints.

The way I read it is that you can have four stores with up to five databases
each and a limit of 16GB per database.

Actually, re-reading the article it seems that although you can have up to
20 (4 x 5) databases, only 1 of these can be a mailbox store.

Yes, that is correct. You are limited to one mailbox store database on
Standard Edition.

You can make a change to the registry to get an extra gig, so that your
users can log into their stores, clean up a little bit. From there you can
run an offline defrag to clean up the database.

Remember to set it back once you are below 16GB...so that you don't get
surprised by the mail store shutdown at 17GB.
Always remember that the system administrator (or their management) is
responsible for implementing a product that will handle the business
requirements for their environment. Personally, I would not blame Seagate
if I purchased a 36GB Cheetah and it filled up at 36GB...and then had to pay
more for the 72GB version. Microsoft documents the Standard and Enterprise
edition very well.

How do you tell if you have EX2003 Standard or Enterprise? I have another
post that talks about this more, but basically I installed Enterprise and it
is still crashing at the 16GB limit.

In ESM navigate to the appropriate administrative group. Click on Servers
in the left hand pane. The list of servers will appear in the right hand
pane. There is a column called "Edition" which shows whether the server is
Enterprise or Standard.
