exchange 2003 Clustering |
|
|
I have 2 physical locations connected via fiber. As I understand
clustering right you will have to exchange servers attached to a
central storage device. The 2 exchange servers will need to be
connected together using the 2nd nic card for the heartbeat. My
question is:::Can I place the 2nd node (Exchange server) in my 2
physical location and create a private vlan for the heartbeat? All my
customer really wants is if the 1st node dies for whatever reason it
will fail over to the 2nd node and everything is grand. I understand
the Geographically dispersed Cluster where there are 2 storage devices
at both locations and replication will need to be done between those 2
storage devices but that is not what my customer is looking for. I
Just need to know if I can use the switch to create a vlan for the
heartbeat between the nodes?

Well, what about the shared storage...
If this is going to be pure MS cluster for Exchange, then the shared storage
will be a problem in this case...

Actually, your customer IS looking for a geographically dispersed
cluster...it's just not as capable (or expensive) as other geocluster
solutions. Geoclusters come in different configurations and costs, and this
type of cluster would fall into the "geocluster" category.
It is entirely possible to configure a cluster as you describe, though you
must still follow the rules of MSCS in this configuration. The cluster node
at the second site must still reside on the same subnet as node1, and the
heartbeart can't appear routed to the O/S. See the following KB for more
details:

Microsoft has a special website about "Exchange Geoclusters" (in case you
do not already know it):
