WINS and Exchange 2000 to 2003 Upgrade Problems |
|
|
I have recently upgraded one of the nodes of my exchange 2003 from exchange
2000. I have been attempting to upgrade the cluster resource to the new
version of exchange, but I am having a problem that I am having difficulty
finding any solutions.
I take the exchange resources offline, move them to the upgraded node of the
cluster, bring the server name, ip and disk online. I then right-click on the
resource and instruct it to upgrade the resource to the new version of
exchange 2003. After a few seconds, I get an error message:
The format of the specified computer name is invalid.
Facility: Win32
ID no: c00704ba
Microsoft Exchange Cluster Administrator Extension
I have searched the exchange installation log and in all of the initial
scans of the exchange information in AD, all of the computer names are
resolved correctly. However, when it begins the actual install of the server,
I get this message.
I have been told that it may be due to a problem with WINS. I have verified
that the computer is registered with WINS correctly and all AD Domain
Controllers. I have verified that DNS and NetBios name resolution are working
correctly. However, I keep getting this error message, and I don't know what
the name of the computer is that has this error.
The name of the exchange resource is CC-SMTP-V0. The name of the individual
nodes are CC-MSCS-N1 and CC-MSCS-N2. The name of the global catalog and
secondary domain controller is CC-GC-S3 (GC) and CC-GC-S1 (DC). Other
resources that are part of the cluster are CC-FS-V1, CC-SQL-V0, FILES and
CC-TEST-V0. Not a single one of these could be considered an invalid format
for the computer name.
This is the result of nbtstat -n:

The name that concerns me is IS~CC-MSCS-N1. Where does this WINS
registration come from and is it necessary?
I need to have some places to look to see if I can determine the illegal
name that is causing the problem with my exchange installation. If you can
help, please let me know. This problem has plagued me for 3 weeks now and I
need to finish the installation so I can do the remaining upgrades to my
systems.
Thanks!
