I am running Exchange 2003 on SBS2003. I have 30 users and all are working
fine except one.
If I try to send an email with an attachement over 1MB from ONE particular
account, it does not work. I've tried sending the email from both Outllok
2003 (Exchange server mode) and Outlook Web Access on the SBS2003 Server.

Here is what happens:
Create the mail and add attachment (3MB).
The email moves to the sent folder in Outlook and there in no NDR received.
I check the server queues as it is sent and it appears and seems to go fine.
I use message tracking to find the email and everything looks fine.
I check the accounts I sent the mail to and it never arrives!

Mail without attachments works flawlessly
Mail with attachements of ~1.3MB and smaller work fine.

This is only for 1 user!

Outbound mail is restricted to files under 20MB, so I don't think it's the
server.

Thought it may be a weird problem with Exchange so I applied SP2 to Exchange
and rebooted the server. Still not working.

I am puzzled. Can't find anything on this problem. Don't want to delete
mailbox and recreate it, but can anyone think of a better idea?

Thanks,
Tom O'

What about Mailbox Storage Limits? Do you have these set and is the users
mailbox over the limit?

Storage limits are set to notify at 200MB and Prohibit send at 750MB. User
reached 210MB and cleaned up messages by archiving in local Archive folder.

Check the SBS Server Event Viewer for any related errors. Check any Third
Party software such as your AV Software for any configuration on attachment
blocking. Does this occur on internal as well as external mail? If nothing
comes of this, then you may have to either recreate the users mailbox or
look at Winroute and SMTPDiag tools to troubleshoot further. These tools
can downloaded from Microsoft if you Google them.

Server event log show no prblems related to Exchange. Ran the Best Practices
Analyzer as well.

AV software on server does not scan email right now, I excluded the Exchange
directories. I am going to be implementing GFI MailSecurity Sunday for AV
scanning. I have GFI MailEssentials running for Spam but it only scans
incoming mail.

I will run Winroute and SMTPdiag just to see output, but this only happens
on 1 mailbox and mail without attachments work fine.

Is there a tool to diag mailboxes? I use Veritas Backup Exec to do a full
nightly backup and it does a consistency check every night with no errors.

If there is nothing else to try, what would be the best way to delete and
recreate the mailbox?

Thanks,

Tom O'

UPDATE:

I just logged onto the users mailbox using OWA. I found a message in the
users inbox that had 7-8 attachments totaling 8.5MB. I forwarded the message
to my mail account (same one I was trying before: in another domain, hosted
by a hosting company) and it went????????

I didn't make any changes and today and the only things that happened last
night were: Full backup w/Consistency check, Receipeint policies ran cleanups
(delete mail > 7days from deleted items and junk email).

Getting weirded! I will have the user try to send mail from Outlook on
Monday and see if the problem has gone away (if only for right now).

I will post my results after more testing on Monday.

Thanks,

Tom O'

You might check to insure your SBS Licensing is correct. In other words, if
you are exceeding your License Limit then this could be the cause as SBS
will start to do oddball things.
