We have recently taken on IT support for another company. In the process we
have added another domain. Short version of the story is that some AD user
accounts were migrated from the existing domain to the new one. It would seem
as though these accounts are having issues connecting to new OWA environment.
They get to the new site fine, logon with their credentials then get 403
errors with file or dir cannot be found. Users who had newly created AD
accounts in this new domain are not having this issue, just the migrated
ones. Does anyone know the cause of this?

Under users and computers, in exchange features, is OWA enabled? Try
disabling and renabling the OWA function as well. Are there any
interesting events in the event log (you may have to turn on debugging).

Do all these users have an email address in the Primary SMTP domain defined
in your Default Recipient Policy?

Have a look at this:

Yes OWA is enabled, I will attempt disable and re-enable. Didn't see anything
in the Exchange server logs, will look at OWA server logs.

Yes all the users have an email address in the Primary SMTP domain as defined
in our Default Recipient Policy. I think I came across this article in my
searches, however the solution listed for Exchange 2003 was to install SP1,
which we have already done.
I should have mentioned in my original post that we were running Exchange
2003.

Have the new users' mailboxes been moved to the same server (or Routing
Group) as the existing ones?

403 (file not found) its not able to locate some thing in the metabase for
that user. Can you open your IIS logs( go to start run type logfiles , hit
enter) Open W3SVC1 and look for the file with todays date on it.

Try logging onto OWA using domain\username or UPN name.

If nothing works, then try removing the exchange attributes from the
migrated user and associate back which might restamp the missing attributes
on the user account, dont worry u are not going to loose any data in this
exercise.

I am at another one of our sites for a while working on a network upgrade
project. I will have a look at this suggestion next week when I return to our
data center.

It has taken time than expected to get back into this issue.

For a bit of further background, we have two separate addresses available
for OWA access on the existing domain. One is only available internal (call
this owa) to the network, the other is available either internally, or
externally (call this owa1). The new domain that was added only has one
address available to them (call this webmail) . From doing some searching
around with the user's account that was having issues, the following was
determined:
I get make sure username and password correct when logging on to the owa
address, as expected since the AD account was migrated to another domain.
However I do get in when logging on to the owa1 address, and it brings up the
mailbox. With the webmail address I am getting the file or dir not found
error.

One other thing, we have left the old e-mail address as a SMTP account so
that any mail sent to the old address would not get lost (this was in the
form of fistinitiallastname, the new standard is firstname.lastname). However
from going through the logs that you had mentioned. I don't see anything
showing up when I try connecting to webmail. I do see entries for owa1, these
listed as the firstinitiallastname, not as others seems to show up as the
default SMTP address.

I was wondering what exact attributes you were talking about removing from
the users account?
