Here's a link to some case studies on why companies are migrating to
Exchange 2003 from IBM Lotus Notes:

Why do you want to migrate?
Is there a specific feature that you NEED that is lacking from Notes?
Do you have any Notes applications in use other than mail?
Keep in mind that Notes is a lot easier to recover than Exchange.
It sounds like you want to migrate either because you don't understand
Notes, or you aer caught up in the MS hype. Just think about the cost of
licensing and training.

Re: why to migrate from lotus to exchange |

Its not just hype, Notes is falling behind.
Here is an interesting article from Forbes Magazine I usually show to
Customers who want me to migrate thier Domino/Notes Mail System to Exchange
2003.
http://www.forbes.com/technology/2005/04/06/cz_dl_0406notes.html
http://www.forbes.com/technology/2005/08/23/lotus-microsoft-email-cz_dl_0823lotus.html
The Exchange feature set is much more rich than Notes is and from what I
have heard it is no longer a priority of IBM's
In the last few years there has been a large market share switch from Notes
being the most widely used messaging/collaboration solution to Exchange. As
it stands Exchange is the most widely used solution per mailboxes.
The big issue customers have with Notes is that they don't have any sense of
direction. In compairison to Exchange, there is a clear road map of what MS
is doing with Exchange and where it is going.

Recovering Notes is as simple as reloading the software and doing a
straight tape restore of a volume. Testing your disaster recovery is as
simple as getting access to a computer with enough disk space.
The main issue on that migration is still cost and whether you have any
Notes applications in use. |

No it's not. Have you tried restoring an Exchange server to a non-networked
computer not running AD, let alone an exact duplicate of your live domain?
Exchange is many things, easy to recover is not one of them. |

Re: why to migrate from lotus to exchange |

I wouldn't put myself in that position....Nor would I consider it. Most
large environments have a test lab if you need to do a non-production
recovery.
Most of the enterprise environments I have Architected and Implemented have
a very fast Time To Recovery. I have seen Terabytes of mail data restored in
minutes. I can also recover a 20 GB store in less than 10 minutes using
Recovery Storage Groups and then Dial-tone it back into a new Database.
It may be different than Notes, but to say Notes is better than Exchange at
DR would be incorrect.
After Exchange 12 is released it will be game over.
