Ntbackup and Exchange 2003 |

Hi!
We have just installed Exchange 2003 and plan to use ntbackup. Have read
some stuff but I am not sure what can be backuped/restored with ntbackup.
Can someone please clear this out for me.
If I use ntbackup, what of this can be done?
1) Restore single mail from a users mailbox?
2) Restore a users mailbox?
3) Restore everyones mailboxes at once?
4) Full restore of whole server?

Our company also want to do it by NTbackup...
but failed...and last, we wasted money to buy a BackupExec 9.1 version
.....~__~
Any body can did it by NTBackup ?

Where I have written not exactly is where you would need to use the |
Recovery Storage Group within Exchange 2003. You can create an RSG on
the server and then assign the relevant store to it (it doesn't do PFs
and if you only have standard edition you only have one store to
choose from). You can then conduct a restore of the live store on the
live server and the restore will be "diverted" to the RSG. You will
then be able to either restore an entire mailbox to the live store or
you will be able to extract the entire mailbox to a PST file and then
find the individual message you need.
You can also use the RSG restore method if you suffer a sudden
disaster with the store and need to offer the users "dial-tone" email,
i.e. email service with no email in it. You can then restore to RSG
and then "backfill" the live store with the old mail. The users will
just see their old mail suddenly popping back in.
You can do other stuff with the RSG but you're best off reading up on
that yourself later on after you understand the basics.

Why do you think BackupExec was a waste of money? If you bought it
specifically to back up the live Exchange databases, I suspect that you
didn't read enough about the specs.
9.x will no longer backup a remote server without an agent. Also, you cannot
backup an open database (Exchange, SQL, etc.) without an agent that
specifically is intended for it. Veritas has an agent for on-line/real-time
backups of Exchange. This will cost extra, though.
