adding a 2nd domain |
|
|
Hi everyone
We have just installed Exchange 2003 on a cluster server.
We have 2 domains 123.com and 456.com. We are unsure of how to add the 2nd
(456.com) domain.
Initially I thought we would add it under the recipient policy but it seems
that that will only make it a secondary domain.
I have been looking at creating a SMTP Virtual Server to do this or is it a
new SMTP connector that we need.
Many thanks
Marcus

What is your desired end result from having the second domain? Do you just
want mail to be able to be received at the second domain?
With recipient policies, you can use the filtering capability to say that
"this particular group of people should be assigned addresses of @123.com",
and then "this group of people should be assigned addresses of @456.com".
I'm simplifying it, but in a nutshell that is how it can work.
Understand that all Recipient policies do is let Exchange know that it is
responsible for mail for that particular domain. While it is true that
recipient policies (in conjunction with RUS) will define the primary SMTP
address for a user (default reply-to address), that doesn't mean that e-mail
can't be sent from the other address as well. Just food for thought.

Hi Ben
and thanks for your reply
yes our desired end result is to be able to be received at the second
domain. So we should set up a filter to take care of this?

If you just want to receive, and want everyone to have an e-mail address
with the second domain, then simply add it to your default recipient policy.
If you want to limit who is assigned the new domain address, then create a
new recipient policy and add the address to that and use filters to
determine who gets the address.
