Offline Address Book |
|
|
When using OL2K3 and E2K3 in Online Mode, you can search the GAL by using
just the users First Name (our GAL has the Display Name in the format "Last,
First").
When in Cache Mode, you cannot. I gather this is because the Offline
Address Book is not generating a search for the First Name Field (or
something similar) where as an Online query does. Does anyone know how to
change this so that Cache Mode users can search by first name?
Thanks.

RE: Offline Address Book |

Hi Ken,
Thanks for posting here.
Do you mean "Outlook Web Access" here as the "Online Mode" you mentioned?
In fact, the GAL search function in Outlook is much powerful than what in
OWA. According to my test result, if you want to search your contact by
their first name, which is not the beginning letters of their display name,
in Outlook, please follow the steps below:
1. Select Tools/Address Book to open the Outlook Address book
2. Select Global Address List option in the dropdown list
3. Select View/Toolbar to enable the toolbar view
4. Click the Search icon, which is the second icon from left
5. Fill the contact's first name in the first name field and then click OK
Hope it works. If anything is unclear, please feel free to post here.

Re: Offline Address Book |

I mean Online Mode in Outlook 2003, and Cache Mode in Outlook 2003. Though
the process you provide will work, it isn't as convenient as simply typing
in the users first name to find the match.
When OL2K3 is in Online Mode, typing the first name of a user will display
all users that match that name. If you do this same search in OL2K3 Cache
Mode, it will not. The reason for this is that in OL2K3 Cache Mode, you are
using the Offline Address Book, which appears to have (or not have) the
first name field in its search process.
My question is how to modify the Offline Address Book to include a first
name search.

Re: Offline Address Book |

My understanding of the issue is:
For example, there are three contacts existing in the address list: Brain
Gates, Bob Gates, Pat Cai. You open the address book in Outlook 2003 and
put the letter B in the name field. In online mode, the recipients whose
first name begin with B will be picked up, however, in cache mode, it
won't. Am I right? If I have misunderstood again, would you please capture
some screenshots to help me know your issue clearly so that I can provide
more precious information.
Please have a look at this KB article first to see if it can solve the
problem.
831124 How to force Outlook 2003 to resolve proxy addresses and custom
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=831124
According to my test result, there is no difference in the address book
between Outlook online mode and cache if Outlook is working properly,
though cache mode is using an Offline address book. So I suggest repair
Outlook address book. We can create a new Outlook profile to test the
issue. Please refer to:
How to create a new e-mail profile in Outlook 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=829918
To recreate a Outlook address book
1. Select Tools/E-mail account/View or Change existing directories or
address books
2. Delete the existing Address book(MAPI) and then create a new one. It is
only an Outlook service and it will not affect the your contact enties.
3. Select Go/folder List view, open the properties pane of the contact
folder
4. Switch to Outlook Address Book tab and select "show this folder as
E-mail address book" option.
Meanwhile, I suggest try using another working machine to test the issue to
see if it is a particular problem. In the problematic Outlook, try using
Help/Dectect and Repair to repair the Outlook component.
Hope it works. If anything is unclear, please feel free to let me know.

Re: Offline Address Book |

Your understanding is almost correct:
In ADUC the user would have the following fields using your example of Pat
Cai:
Exchange General Tab, Alias: PCai
General Tab, First Name: Pat
General Tab, Last Name: Cai
General Tab, Display Name: Cai, Pat
When in OL2K3 Online, typing Pat will resolve Pat Cai.
When in OL2K3 Cache Mode, typing Pat will NOT resolve Pat Cai, only typing
PCai will resolve.
I'll look at the information you provided and let you know. Thanks for the
info. |

Re: Offline Address Book |

Hi Ken,
I have tested this issue again on both Outlook 2003 and Outlook 2003 sp1
edition. No matter in online mode or in cache mode, the results is the
same. I can pick up the user by inputting the second keyword of his name.
For Pat Cai, I input Cai; and for Cai, Pat, I input Pat. The right entry
will be picked up. However, on prior it picks up the name if its first
keyword matches. For example, if both Cai, Pat and Pat, John exist, when
inputting Pat, Pat, John will be selected.
Another workaround is using another address book tool in Outlook. When you
composing a new message, click To button on the top section, you can pick
up recipient in this address book.
Hope the information helps. If anything is unclear, please feel free to
post here.
