I am in the process of moving from exchange 5.5 to 2003 and had a quick
question. Why is it that when I create a new mailbox using Active
Directory, it does not show up in the exchange system manager. Does
someone have to log into the mailbox before i can see it? Please help,
any info is greatly appreciated.

Yes - the mailbox isn't really created til it receives mail/someone logs
into it, but you should still see the SMTP address info in the object in
ADUC if your recipient update service is running properly & your recipient
policy is set up right. Is that the case?

IIRC, you need to send a message to the mailbox in order for it to get
initialized...

Yes, i can see the SMTP info in th ADUC. Sending a test email to all
users fixed the problem.

Great - it's not really a problem per se, though. :)
