Hello all.

I'm setting up a move from NT4/Exchange 5.5 and would like to know about
compatibilities 2003/5.5. I've been reading up on the MS site I and I think I
got it but would like to confirm..

Specifically: can Exchange 5.5 be installed in Windows 2003? It's impossible
right now to install Exchange 2003 (no training and no software, and can't
delay this any mopre...)

Can Excnahge 5.5 be upgraded to Exchange 2003? Or do I have to uninstall it
and install 2003?

Cheers and thx

Exchange 5.5 cannot run on Windows 2003. The only version of Exchange
supported on Windows 2003 is Exchange 2003.

Exchange cannot be in-place upgraded to Exchange 2003. You can install a
new Exchange 2003 server into the existing Exchange 5.5 site and move the
mailboxes across, however.

How diferent is Exchange 2003 from 5.5? My training is scheduled for April,
buit I have to have the new servers up by February...

In 5.5, I have 1 site with 1 server and 30 mailboxes, nothing fancy. Think I
could install the 2003 version with just a manual?...

Exchange 2003 is very different to 5.5. Running setup is the easy bit -
it's all the rest of the requirements for coexistence that require more
thought, like the ADC, etc. You might want to get help with that bit, or
possibly consider installing a fresh Exchange 2003 server with no
coexistence, using ExMerge for only 30 users. Admittedly, I don't know all
the facts about your network, so this (ExMerge) may or may not be
practical....

Coexistence: you mean Exchange 5.5 with Exchange 2003? I'm thinking about
ignoring the 5.5 completely (I'll transfer the messages to local folder
files) and rebuilding the mail boxes on 2003 by hand.

OK, so use ExMerge to transfer the messages to PST files, and you'll avoid
the need for coexistence - this will simplify things a lot!

BTW, a good book to learn Exchange 2003 is 'Learning Exchange Server 2003'
by William Boswell.
