Exchange 2003 two domains, same recipients |
|
|
Hoping someone can reassure my thoughts on this Config dilemma!
We presently have 1 domain with Exchange 2003 which includes all users
mailboxes. We are rolling out a new product which will require and new email
domain, however the exisitng users will also need to access the new one also
and would like to do so with the ability of using Outlook and viewing both
accounts simultaneously. Money right now is of no object, I want to
configure this the right way so if need be this can be expanded with no or
very minimal downtime. Should I have one Exchange server supporting both
domains (havent done this w/2003 but did w/5.5) or 2 exchange servers within
a trusted domain structure? Any suggestions whatsoever would be greatly
appreciated!!!

Hard to say without knowing the app, but generally you should keep it simple
and keep as little hardware as you can and still maintain the solution and
reliability standards.
The way to give additional SMTP addresses and tell the system to accept them
as inbound is to use recipient policies. If your app can handle the user
using the same mailbox and only sending as one recipient, then keep it to
one server/ one domain/ one forest.
My $0.02 anyway (you should be under budget still based on the given
parameters :)

Thnak you Al for your assistance!!!...regarding your comments:
The app used by our employees is Outlook 2003. If I have the users make the
"From" field visible in Outlook, would they not be able to choose which
address they would like to send from? The reason why I am considering this
option is due to a number of us employees have Blackberry devices which if at
all possible we would like for both domain accounts to be delivered to them.

Delivery is a different thing. When a message comes in to the system it's
evaluated for the final recipient. If you have a primary address of
user@doamin.com and a secondary of secondary_User@secondary_domain.com then
you will receive messages for either of those addresses. However, when you
send as either of those users, then the from address will be discarded and
your address associated with the user you authenticated as will be inserted.
I think that would defeat your purpose.
Your BB users can typically share the same address for receipt. Just
configure the BB user to send as the same user.
BB never intended to cause you to have to purchase additional hardware. You
may want to check with them to find out how they suggest you do this to
solve your needs. Else I just don't completely understand the whole thing.
