The previous IT person left me quite a mess.

Our current setup has a front end and a back end Exchange 2003 server
both running Enterprise Beta. Both of which have expired.

My company is a relatively small company. We have neither the money nor
the need for 2 Enterprise licenses so we have decided to move to a
single Standard edition server.

My plan is to use the procedure outlined in this URL
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;840015 however
the following line bothers me "Note If you created multiple storage
groups or databases while Exchange Server 2003 Enterprise Edition or
Exchange 2000 Enterprise Server was installed, you will not be able to
recover these databases."

You see, under "First storage group" we have two stores "100" and
"200". "100" is associated with the priv1.edb and related files while
the "200" store is associated with 200.edb.

I plan to migrate the 200s to the 100s before the switch to the single
server next weekend.

My question is, twofold. Will this work? and Is this necessary?

Come to think of it, will the hour grace period be enough time to move
mailboxes one at a time before it dumps the information store?
Any help, or comments would be appriciated.

Thanks,

Megan

1. Exchange Standard only support 1 storage group, 1 mailbox store, that's
the reason why you can't mount 2 stores (unless one of them is the public
store, of course).
2. As I see it, you have 2 options:
- follow the article and attach the store directly to Exchange
- do a side installation of the new server, and then move the mailboxes
and other information to the new server. Don't forget to follow the
procedures described in Q822931 before removing the old server.

I don't know if an hour is enough, because I don't know the size of your
database. But I think that if you restart the Information store you get
another hour.

I don't believe I can add another server to the network as I will be
using Standard edition and all back end servers must be Enterprise
edition.

I will have to go with the first option (follow the article) and hope
that an hour is long enough for the individual mailbox moves. So do you
think moving the 200s to the 100s will work?

Fortunately I plan to use a brand new server as the exchange server so
I can test this before I do it...

I never heard that you cannot have a standard server as back-end. With
Exchange 2000 you must use Enterprise Edition for the front-end, but with
Exchange 2003 that's not true.
So, you can use both methods, I (strongly) believe they'll work.
