5.5 migration to 2003 |
|
|
I have a question on a 5.5 to 2003 migration. I have perfromed a few of these
before, and am familiar with the different options, however, my current
environment is different than most.
Currently, My company has 2 NT 4.0 domains. Domain A contains all user
accounts, and Domain B is just 1 server with Exchange 5.5 with all the
mailboxes (don't ask why, this was setup way before I got here). In the next
few months, I will be upgrading the primary domain to 2003 AD and move all
the mailboxes to andExchange 2003 server. The secondary domain will be
decomissioned.
I would like to do a phased migration for several reasons, and in order to
do this, I need to join the 2003 server to the same site as the 5.5 server. I
do not believe I would be able to do this if the Exchange Servers are in
separate domains (please correct me if I'm wrong). If this is the case, what
would be my best option?
- Do I upgrade both domains to AD in the same forest>Install Exchange 2003
in Domain A in the same site as the 5.5 server
- Do I install Exchange 5.5 in Domain A>Move everything over from the Domain
B Exchange Server> Then upgrade Domain A to AD>Install Exchange 2003>etc.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

You only need to upgrade one of the domains to AD. Setup a two way trust to
the other domain. Setup the ADC to replicate recipient objects and public
folder objects from the 5.5 directory into AD. Then install the 2003 server
into the 5.5 site by choosing to join an existing org and then enter the 5.5
server name and service account when it asks. At this point you are ready to
start moving mailboxes with the move mailbox wizard. To phase the migration,
select subsets of users and move their mailboxes. You also need to replicate
public and system folders before you decomission the 5.5 server or the NT
domain.
