I encountered a problem when moving mailboxs with the error message:
does not have a master account SID. Please use Active Directory MMC to set
an active account as this user's master account. I notice this problem with
many other accounts. Can someone explain to me why this happens.

With Exchange 2003 being integrated with AD all mailboxes must have an
account assigned to it. Normally Exchange and AD will attempt to associate a
user id with a mailbox based on the alias of the mailbox. If it cannot do
this then it will say there is no account SID. Do you keep mail on the
server or in PST files? If you use PST files this would be a simple way but
slightly more work. Get the Exmerge utility and after creating a new mailbox
and ID in AD then use Exmerge to bring the PST file back into the server.
This utility can also be used to pull mail from server mailboxes.

We keep all the mail on the server.

Well as I said using exmerge to first connect to your 5.5 mailbox and export
the mailbox to a pst file and then merge back into the new 2003 mailbox would
be a way to do this but it would be a little more work.

Are the mailboxes you are attempting to move considered "resource"
mailboxes? I.e. - they are just mailboxes that are associated with another
user who also has a mailbox?

There has to be a one to one ratio of mailboxes to user accounts.

Are the accounts in AD disabled?

How are you trying to move them? If both servers are in the same
organization, Exmerge should not be required.

If the mailbox being moved is associated with a disabled account,
there's no account that has access to the mailbox, so the move fails.

You can fix that by assigning the account "SELF" the "Read
permission", "Full mailbox access", and "Associated external account"
mailbox rights.
