hi,
Can someone from Microsoft please let me know where MS stand in terms of
keeping smtp queue on separate disks in a SAN environment.Storage vendor is
recommending mixing the disks with the log disks for performance
reasons........I would like to know why they should remain separate ro is
that an outdated best practice due to be updated.Should the stoage vendor be
ultimately deciding the best road to take as exchange is sitting on their
arrays ?

Hi Niamh,

You should take a look at the Performance and Scalability Guide for E2K3 for
storage configuration recommendations:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/exchange/guides/E2k3Perf_ScalGuide/755d32d3-0894-4e77-bfb1-a0ff6bb97a4d.mspx

"Mailroot Directory Location
In Exchange Server 2003, when messages arrive through SMTP, the data is
written to a disk in the form of an NTFS file system file (specifically, an
..eml file). By default, these files are written to a directory
(<drive>:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\Mailroot) on the same disk partition where
the Exchange Server 2003 binary files are installed.

In some scenarios, such as configuring a bridgehead or relay server,
relocating the SMTP Mailroot directory to a faster disk partition may
improve performance."

Cheers,
