Here's my scenerio. I have an IP SANS that is isolated on its' own VLAN and
IP range. The components of the SAN have 172.16.x.x addresses. The SAN
components need to be able to send email by relaying off my Exchange server.
My Exchange server is in a different VLAN but has a second NIC with a
172.16.x.x address that is on the same VLAN as the SAN components. I have
granted the SAN components permission to relay through the SMTP Virtual
server. When I try to send a test message from the SAN components the message
fails saying "Failed to send Test Email because of the following error:
Sending email failed: SMTP server dropped connection" Any ideas how to make
this work? Thanks.

1) From the Exchange server, can you PING both subnets?
2) Is the SMTP server listening on at least one IP in each subnet?

David,

Yes, I can ping both subnet from the Exchange server.

I'm not sure whether the SMTP server is listening on both. I know it is
listening on my main subnet because mail is moving. How do I set it to listen
on the other? I was looking at the properties for the SMTP Virtual server but
couldn't figure out how to set it to listen on both. Thanks for the quick
response.

Do you have any PCs on the other subnet, or just SAN devices? I ask
because the thing I'd want to do is try telneting to each address from
each subnet and see what happens. Are you familiar with that process
already?

David,

It was set to listen on port 25 but I still can't send email from the SAN
components. The selections usder the general tab were for the 129.82.X.X
address, the 172.16.x.x address, and a selection named (All Unassigned). All
are set to listen on port 25.

David,

The snippet I copied was from one of my SAN units trying to telnet to port
25 on my Exchange server. I copied a little more than I needed to. The second
NIC in the Exchange box is 172.16.0.3.

David,

Something we've noticed:

I turned on logging within the virtual SMTP server and then tried telnetting
from the Exchange server to port 25 on the second NIC and got no response and
nothing showed up in the log. I also tried telnetting to the port 25 on the
primary NIC and got a normal response plus an entry in the log. It is like
there is something blocking the ports on the second NIC. The Windows firewall
is turned off and there isn't any other firewall.

If your exchange server has only one ip address bound to it in its tcp/ip
prop then the default SMTP server can only listen on port 25 using this ip
address, but if you can ping the ip address of the exchange box from the NAS
or SAN that you are using and you can telnet into port 25 using this ip
address then there you dont need to add a second ip to exchange.

David,

We tried telnetting into port 25 from the SAN. This is the response we got:

[root@Cobia3 /root]# telnet 172.16.0.3 25
Trying 172.16.0.3...
Connected to 172.16.0.3.
Escape character is '^]'.

telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Network is unreachable
[root@Cobia3 /root]#

Maybe this is actually an IP routing issue. How are packets supposed to
be getting from one subnet to the other?

David,

Do the packets really need to get from the 172.16.x.x subnet to the
129.82.x.x subnet for email to flow? The account the email is destined for is
on the Exchange server. The email isn't going outside the Exchange server.
Would I have to bridge the NICs together for this to work?

Going back to this:

How? By listing their IPs in the SMTPs list of allowed relayers, or
something else?

From one of these machines, what happens when you "TELNET a.b.c.d 25",
where a.b.c.d is the IP address of the Exchange server? Earliers posts on
that were unclear to me.

David,

I added the IP addresses of the SAN somponents to the allowed relayers in
the SMTP virtual server on the Exchange server and stopped and restarted the
virtual server.

When we try to telnet from the SAN component to the Exhange server's port 25
we get the following:
[root@Cobia3 /root]# telnet 172.16.0.3 25
Trying 172.16.0.3...
Connected to 172.16.0.3.
Escape character is '^]'.
Connection closed by foreign host.
[root@Cobia3 /root]#

We turned on logging in the SMTP virtual server and nothing appears in the
logs from the 172.16.x.x subnet.
