access exchange from home |

I have a private network with exchange 2003. the users use exchange for
internal email and calendaring. they use outlook to connect to exchange and
internet email.
how can they connect to exchange while out of the office using outlook on
their laptop?

OWA and/or RPC over HTTPS and/or VPN - but get rid of POP, and host your
mail directly on Exchange so it handles all your mail, internal and
external. |

hosting it all in house is not an option.
1. all private IPs inside
2. no tape backup only remote online backup ( no internet no restore no )
not what I suggest for a backup solution but thats what the client wants to
do. the online backup will not backup exchange correctly.
owa has its limitations you can not do everything you can with outlook.
I was thinking using NOIP.com using noip free to allow access to the
internal network. pop a hole in the firewall use remote desktop to server,
create a profile for the user ( only 2 users with laptops that will go
remote) setup outlook in profile. only sent mail will not match outlook on
laptops for internet email.
not perfect I was looking for a better way

Not sure how this is relevant to your specific question - and if you're
using Exchange at all, and not backing it up, I think you're worse off than
if you didn't use it at all. You'll be completely screwed if your server
crashes. Will your users be happy about that?
You're already using Exchange, even if you aren't using it for Internet
mail. All your mail is stored in the mailboxes, or in PST files? The latter
is decidedly not recommended, and you can't share calendars that way anyway.

Ouch. I'd explain to the client that backing up Exchyange is mandatory. You
don't need a tape drive - you could even use removable hard drives (USB) or
a mapped network drive, and use the built in NTBackup to do scheduled
backups to a file, a drive, whatever. You can then backup that backup file
to your online backup provider.

What kind of profile are you referring to? If I understand what you just
wrote correctly, you would need to be running terminal services for this on
a dedicated box. Not going to help you for laptop users either.

To be frank, this sounds like a bit of a mess. You are creating more work
for yourself, and creating many potential points of failure. Use the server
as it's designed to be used. Don't use POP accounts in Outlook. Set up
everyone to access their mailboxes directly, have the laptop users (at
least) use Outlook 2003 and cached mode, and set them up for either VPN or
RPC over HTTP so they can get mail while on the road just as though they
were in the office. Do regular backups. Store backups offsite. Use good
Exchange-aware antivirus software. Etc. Everyone will be a lot happier.

I will be using msbackup to backup the exchange store, system state and IIS
then using online backup to backup those files. I will also use an external
hard drive and karens replicator to copy the files to the external hard
drive. still not the standard I trust I perferr tapes with daily backups with
a history along with the other current backup methods. you can never have
enough backup.
using outlook 2003 the users will connect to internet email and exchange. I
only have 2 users that need remote email access to look at emails and
calendars
