I've set up a single Exchange 2003 server running on Windows 2003 SP1
for RPC over HTTP for Outlook access using just about every technical
document imaginable. I am using a temporary Verisign SSL certificate
for testing purposes. I am able to reach the /exchange address of the
server internally and externally using https. However, when I try to
reach the /rpc address using the same credentials, it will not proceed
to the 403 error page. Instead, the server keeps asking for my
credentials.

I've made all of the recommended registry adjustments. I have checked
all my settings and almost everything looks perfect.

I've noticed in various documentation that the rpc virtual directory
should have the following settings:

Application Directory: DefaultApplication
Application Pool: DefaultApplicationPool

In my setup, both fields are blank and greyed out.

I've looked at the log files and it is returning 401 errors when I try
to access the Exchange Server using RPC over HTTP.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Blake.

Any luck on this? i'm having the same problem?

i can use rpc over https in the building, but outside i get the same thing.
my ssl is working from outside. and like you, almost everything looks
perfect.

one of the things i'm concerned about is the Global Catalog. my ex2003 box
is NOT a domain controller, nor is it a GC. I'm not sure if that affects
things.

but like you, I have one ex2003 box that i cannot get rpc over https working
from the outside. have you had any luck? is anyone from microsoft watching
this group and helping you?

Are either of you using ISA? I've found that for this to work, both the
cert itself and it's root have to be installed on the ISA box as well.

Hi

I have the same issues.
The exchange server run on the private lan behind a firewall as a back-end
exchange server configured as rpc proxy back-end server with port for rpc
fixed as described in the documentation.
The GC run on a another machine who is domain controler.
An exchange server run as a front-end in the DMZ with official address and
configured also as rpc proxy server with ssl ( private certificate from our
pki infrastructure)
Outlook clients can connect to there mail boxe using ssl and rpc only if the
machine is member of the active directory domain.
If the same workstation is removed from the domain, I can not connect to the
exchange server, however I can connect via ssl to the web server.
Any ideas ?
Must the client running xp sp2 member of the domain ?

thanks and best regards
