2003 SP2 Cluster SMTP Failed to load

After installing Exchnage 2003 SP2 SMTP cluster resource will not load.
Everything else works fine.

Event viewer gives ID 1008. SMTP Virtual Server Instance - (EXCHANGE):
Failed to start or stop the protocol instance. Possible causes are
failure to open the metabase; failure to set the start or stop
command; or failure to start or stop protocol instance in a timely
fashion.

The help had me check metadata and clusterenable is set to 1.


Anyone have this happen or any ideas on how to fix it.

SOLUTION:

The Queue directory in is vsi1 of mailroot was corupted. Infact it
was a file of size 0 and not a directory at all. renamed mailroot to
mailroot.old and started the cluster resource. It recreated the
directory and all is better.

Just empty the bad mail folder
