Hi!

We are about to deploy Windows Server 2003 SP1 on our Exchange 2003 servers.
Are there any known issues or preparations to consider before applying this
service pack on the servers?

Regards
Marcus Torstensson

There have been the odd one or two questions crop up but generally

they have a root cause outside of the update.

Clearly you will be doing backups and test restores. Do that in a
virtual image or alternate hardware first and then apply the SP to the
restored images, just to get a feel of any glaring possibilities.

Hi Marcus,

Thank you for posting here!

I would like to let you know that Windows server 2003 SP1 has shown to be a
very stable service pack. However, in some particular situation, the
following symptom may appear. If you encounter the following issues, please
apply the corresponding hotfixes.

Note: It is always strongly recommended that you fully backup the server,
such as Exchange information store and system state, prior to installing
any significant update, such as a service pack.

1. A known issue that occurs when the Network Security feature in Security
Configuration Wizard (SCW) is run on an Exchange server on which Exchange
is not installed to the default path (i.e., %ProgramFiles%\Exchsrvr). Using
SCW could block the TCP/IP port access by Exchange processes (System
Attendant, Store, MTA, etc.). The detailed information about this is
documented in the following Microsoft KB article:

896742 After you run the Security Configuration Wizard in Windows Server
2003
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=896742

2. Outlook Web Access (OWA) has Logon issue to access Exchange Server 2003
running Windows 2003 SP1 on a cluster server. Please refer to the following
Microsoft KB article for more information:

841560 A user receives a "500 - Internal server error" error message when
the user tries

We recommend that customers who are running the original release version of
Exchange Server 2003 first upgrade to Exchange Server 2003 SP1, and then
install the update that is documented in article 841561 in the Microsoft
Knowledge Base.

841561 "500 - Internal server error" error message when a user tries to
access

3. The mail flow may not work among the Exchange servers or we may
encounter network/Outlook access problem. If so, please install the
following hotfix.

898060 Installing security update MS05-019 or Windows Server 2003 Service
Pack 1 may cause

If you have any further questions, feel free to let me know.

Have a good day!
