Detailed steps for Sending Mail? |
|
|
Hi,
I would be interested to know the specifics of how Exchange goes about
dealing with multiple MX records.
For example, if I send a mail to a domain which has a primary (cost 10) and
secondary (cost 20) mx record, I guess that Exchange does a DNS lookup, finds
the MX records and tries to contact the primary MX record to send the mail.
If the primary MX record is unavailable, does it then try the secondary MX
record or does it just queue the mail and keep trying at the preset intervals?
Any ideas?
Cheers
Nathan

Are you talking external mail routing, yes its all cost based for the most
part.
Lowest weight wins. Internal routing could be different, configuration
dependant.

Hi,
Yes, external mail.
I need to know the detailed steps for mail to go out. To see which mail
server it will go to.
Cheers

It looks for the lowest cost MX if it is unavailable then it tries the Next
lowest cost. once it has tried all of the MX records it will Queue the mail
for later delievery and keep trying until either it's time out is hit or the
mail is delivered.
A good way to check external e-mail addresses to see if they are up and
things are working is to go to www.dnsreport.com and run an e-mail test to
see if both MX records are working. |
